On humans and society being entirely money driven or not, I think you should probably read up on Yochai Benkler’s works. He is my hero on these issues currently. Check out e.g. his speech at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMxz7rzwee8 (if you are impatient, skip Mrs Kagan’s introduction of Benkler…), and article at http://hbr.org/2011/07/the-unselfish-gene/ar/pr for a brief intro.
