Google Wave is now open to the public. If you have a gmail account, you automatically have a wave account. Otherwise, you must sign up. But...

Google just announced that they will be shutting down the Wave project, ostensibly for lack of sufficient uptake (whatever that means). However, they have released to open source possibly a sufficient amount of technology that Wave projects will live on outside of Google. There is even a movement to ask Google to release the available open source code to the apache.org foundation in order for it to continue under a trusted banner.
